Antonelli takes Austin pole with historic F1 title in reach
Kimi Antonelli can become Formula 1’s youngest world champion at Sunday’s United States Grand Prix, with pole position strengthening his chances as he embraces the occasion rather than dwelling on the pressure.

Kimi Antonelli heads into Sunday’s United States Grand Prix with a chance to become Formula 1’s youngest world champion, having secured pole position in Austin. The Mercedes driver says the prospect is bringing greater enjoyment rather than additional pressure, according to BBC Sport.
Antonelli beat Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 0.179 seconds in Saturday’s qualifying at the Circuit of the Americas. The result puts him at the front for a race that could deliver his first drivers’ championship, although victory alone would not be enough to settle the contest.
The BBC reports that Antonelli will clinch the title if he wins, Mercedes team-mate George Russell finishes below eighth and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton finishes below fourth. Hamilton and Russell qualified fifth and sixth respectively, leaving both in positions from which they could prolong the championship fight.
Saturday’s performance also ended Antonelli’s wait for another pole following the Belgian Grand Prix in July. According to the BBC, Mercedes’ early-season advantage has faced challenges first from McLaren and then Red Bull, making his return to the front particularly timely.
At 20, Antonelli would surpass Sebastian Vettel as the youngest driver to win the championship, Formula 1’s official website reports. Vettel established the record in 2010, giving the Italian an opportunity to set a new benchmark while securing his first title.
Antonelli has nevertheless been careful to distinguish the opportunity from an expectation. Speaking on Thursday, he acknowledged that securing the championship in Austin would require an exceptional weekend for him alongside disappointing results for his rivals, a combination he considered unlikely.
His response has been to maintain his usual approach rather than reshape the weekend around the title calculations. Formula 1’s official website reported that a meeting with his race engineer ended with the message to “just have fun”, reflecting his intention to concentrate on each race as it comes.
That outlook leaves Antonelli focused on the part of Sunday he can influence directly: his own performance. Pole position gives him the best starting place, but Verstappen alongside him presents an immediate obstacle, while the finishing positions of Russell and Hamilton remain beyond his control.
Hamilton has also praised Antonelli’s season, according to Formula 1’s official account of Thursday’s media session. For the young Mercedes driver, the prospect of becoming champion represents a childhood ambition, but he has stressed that the work must be completed before any celebrations begin.
Sunday will determine whether Austin becomes the setting for that breakthrough or another step in an unfinished campaign. Formula 1’s race preview makes the immediate requirement clear: Antonelli must win to have any chance of taking the title here; otherwise, his earliest opportunity moves to Mexico City.
