Bitcoin faces selling risk above $85,000 as holder costs loom

Glassnode analysis identifies $85,000 as the start of a substantial long-term holder cost-basis zone, raising the prospect that investors seeking to break even could sell into a Bitcoin recovery.

Bitcoin could encounter renewed selling pressure as it approaches $85,000, according to Glassnode analysis highlighted by Cointelegraph. The level marks the lower boundary of a long-term holder cost-basis zone, putting investors’ potential response to a recovery at the center of the resistance outlook.

In its October 28 report, Glassnode identified approximately 4 million BTC held by long-term investors with acquisition prices between $85,000 and $118,000. Much of that supply dates to 2025, and the firm said some holders could use a rebound to recover their initial investment rather than continue holding.

That creates a potential obstacle rather than a predetermined outcome. A concentration of coins associated with a price range does not establish that their owners have placed sell orders, or that every investor will respond in the same way when prices return to that area.

The distinction matters because the analysis concerns the conditions a rally may face, not simply the price it might reach. Buyers could push Bitcoin toward the zone, but sustaining gains would require demand sufficient to absorb whatever supply holders actually bring to market.

Glassnode’s broader methodology explains why acquisition-price clusters attract attention. Cost-basis distributions map supply across the prices at which coins last moved, providing a more detailed view of positioning than a single market-wide average. The approach helps identify concentrations that an aggregate measure can obscure.

In a separate methodological article, Glassnode explained that the distance between those clusters and the market price affects their relevance. Supply above the trading price can represent potential resistance, while supply below it can indicate potential support. These are interpretations of positioning, not guarantees about subsequent trading.

The same framework also helps explain why long-term investors can matter even when shorter-term traders dominate daily activity. Glassnode noted that a large pool of older holdings can materially influence market outcomes once it becomes responsive to price. Near-market concentrations therefore deserve attention alongside newer buyers’ positions.

The report also offered a counterweight to the resistance warning: losses realized during successive declines had diminished. That suggests overhead selling risk can coexist with reduced willingness to sell into weakness. Neither observation, taken alone, resolves which side will determine the next sustained move.

For the upside, Glassnode identified repeated daily closes above $85,000 as an initial indication that the resistance band could become support. Its stronger confirmation scenario combined a close above $87,500 with recurring exchange-traded fund inflows and rising trading volume.

The next test is therefore whether a recovery can attract durable buying rather than merely revisit holders’ acquisition levels. The source-framed outlook remains conditional: $85,000 is an important threshold to monitor, but the response of buyers and existing holders will determine whether it becomes a ceiling or a foothold.
