Chris Brown given suspended eight-month sentence over nightclub attack
The R&B singer avoided immediate imprisonment after admitting affray over a bottle attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub. His prison sentence was suspended for 12 months.

Chris Brown has been given an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, for attacking a music producer with a glass tequila bottle at a London nightclub. The R&B singer was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, October 26, after previously pleading guilty to affray.
Brown, 37, admitted the offence in July over the attack on Abraham “Abe” Diaw at Tape, a private members’ club in Mayfair. His vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, also pleaded guilty and received a four-month prison sentence, likewise suspended for 12 months, Metropolitan Police confirmed.
The attack took place in the early hours of February 19, 2023, at the club in Hanover Square. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, Brown approached the victim from the dance floor, moved through the crowd and struck him twice over the head with a glass bottle.
Prosecutors said Akinlolu then joined the assault, punching the victim in the head. The attack continued as Diaw tried to escape through the club, and he was kicked while seated on the floor. He attended St Mary’s Hospital with injuries to his head and knee.
Judge Tony Baumgartner described Brown’s repeated use of the bottle against Diaw’s head as dangerous, according to BBC reporting. He said the blows risked causing more serious injuries than those ultimately sustained, while distinguishing the incident from a planned attack.
The court’s decision means Brown will not immediately serve the eight-month prison term. The sentence instead remains suspended for a year, making the distinction between the length of the prison term and the period of suspension central to the outcome. ITV reported that both defendants were also ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.
The guilty pleas followed a lengthy police investigation spanning more than three years from the attack to sentencing. The CPS said both men had left the United Kingdom after the incident and warrants were issued for their arrest. Brown was arrested on May 15, 2025, after returning to Britain for a concert in Manchester.
The prosecution had described the violence as unprovoked when the defendants entered their pleas on July 24, 2026. Senior Crown Prosecutor Claire Campbell said Brown used the bottle as a weapon in a crowded nightclub, framing the case as an assault that endangered the victim amid other people.
Monday’s hearing completes the sentencing stage of the affray prosecution against both men. For Brown, the immediate outcome is a conviction without an immediate prison term; the next 12 months will be the suspension period attached to the sentence imposed by the court.
