Dow Futures Slip but Tech Climbs After SK Hynix Posts Record Quarter; Fed, Microsoft, Google Next

Dow Jones futures retreated modestly in overnight trading on Wednesday even as technology shares pushed higher, with the session's most dramatic news coming from Seoul: SK Hynix posted a record-breaking third quarter that sent its shares sharply higher after hours and reinforced Wall Street's conviction that the AI infrastructure buildout remains firmly intact.

The South Korean memory chipmaker reported third-quarter revenue of 104.62 trillion won, or roughly $78.86 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of 98.34 trillion won. It was the first time in the company's history that quarterly revenue exceeded the 100 trillion won threshold, underscoring just how radically the AI boom has reshaped the semiconductor industry's economics.

Operating profit climbed 632 percent from a year earlier to 83.33 trillion won, beating the 76.72 trillion won consensus estimate and marking a more than sevenfold increase. Operating margins widened to 80 percent, a figure that reflects both the pricing power SK Hynix commands in high-bandwidth memory and the scale advantages that come with dominant market share in AI-grade chips.

The company attributed the outperformance largely to relentless demand for its HBM, or high-bandwidth memory, products used in advanced data center processors and AI accelerators. DRAM bit shipments rose approximately 10 percent sequentially during the quarter, while server DDR5 shipments — a bellwether for enterprise AI adoption — increased more than 40 percent from the second quarter.

SK Hynix paired the earnings beat with a major capital return announcement, pledging to return approximately 100 trillion won to shareholders. The plan includes at least 30 trillion won in cash dividends and 60 trillion won in share buybacks and cancellations, a signal that management expects strong cash generation to continue well into 2027, when the company also guided for increased capital expenditure.

Markets responded swiftly. SK Hynix shares rose 1.92 percent in regular Seoul trading before climbing an additional 6.11 percent after hours, reaching $154.24. The result offered a positive read-through for the broader chip sector, lifting sentiment around AI-linked hardware names even as Dow futures dipped.

On the domestic equity side, the S&P 500 reclaimed a closely watched technical level in the prior session, with Tesla surging more than 5 percent and Nvidia adding 2 percent. Microsoft and Amazon also finished higher, contributing to a broad advance in growth names that kept the Nasdaq Composite ahead of its peers.

The rally unfolded against a backdrop of easing rate-hike anxiety. Financial markets are pricing in roughly a 90 percent probability that the Federal Reserve holds interest rates steady at its October meeting, with any further tightening viewed as more likely to materialize, if at all, later in the year. The Fed's decision is expected Wednesday and will be accompanied by Chair Jerome Powell's remarks, which traders will parse for signals on the pace of any eventual easing.

Earnings season is also at a critical juncture. Some 163 S&P 500 companies are scheduled to report third-quarter results this week, making it the busiest stretch of the reporting cycle. Microsoft and Alphabet, Google's parent, are among the most closely watched, with investors eager to see whether AI-related cloud spending is translating into the revenue acceleration that elevated valuations have long anticipated.

The convergence of the Fed decision and mega-cap tech results means the market faces an unusually concentrated set of catalysts in a narrow window. SK Hynix's blowout quarter has set a high bar and an optimistic tone, but analysts caution that guidance language from Microsoft and Google — particularly around AI capital expenditure and cloud growth rates — will likely determine whether the recent equity momentum can be sustained.
