Stephanie March is heading back to the Special Victims Unit. NBC has confirmed that the actress will reprise her signature role as Alexandra Cabot in the ninth episode of Law & Order: SVU's 28th season, reuniting with the long-running procedural for the first time since 2018.

March originated the character of Cabot, an assistant district attorney assigned to the SVU, when she joined the series in 2000. She remained a series regular for three seasons before departing early in Season 5 under dramatic circumstances — her character appeared to be killed by a drug cartel, only for it to emerge that Cabot had been placed in federal witness protection.

The return of a character once presumed dead became one of SVU's more memorable ongoing threads. Cabot eventually surfaced from witness protection and cycled back into the show's orbit across multiple guest appearances over the years, most recently in Season 19. In between, March also reprised the role in the short-lived NBC spinoff Conviction.

The upcoming episode has been positioned as a quieter kind of homecoming compared to the splashy 600th-episode event earlier in Season 28, which drew back Christopher Meloni as Elliot Stabler. NBC has not released details about the storyline driving Cabot's return or how large a role she will play in the episode.

No airdate for SVU Season 28, Episode 9 has been announced. The series currently airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and streams on Peacock.

SVU, now in its 28th year, remains one of network television's longest-running dramas and a cornerstone of NBC's Thursday night lineup. The show has leaned into nostalgia in recent seasons, periodically threading in legacy characters to reward its loyal audience base.

March has worked steadily in television beyond SVU, with credits including 30 Rock, Grey's Anatomy, and Rescue Me, but the role of Alexandra Cabot remains her most enduring association.

With the Cabot episode still to be scheduled, producers have kept plot specifics closely guarded. Whether the appearance signals a more sustained role for the character or a contained one-off remains to be seen, though SVU's history suggests the door will stay open either way.
