Moscow will host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships after the International Weightlifting Federation awarded the event to Russia on October 25. According to BBC Sport, the decision makes the IWF the first Olympic federation to choose Russia as a world championship host since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The allocation was approved by the federation’s executive board as part of a package of four championship hosting decisions covering 2028 to 2030. It represents a further change in weightlifting’s approach to Russia, following the restoration of athlete eligibility earlier this year.

The federation’s initial response to the invasion was markedly different. On March 3, 2022, it condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and suspended athletes, team officials and technical officials from Russia and Belarus from international and continental weightlifting events until further notice.

That statement also barred IWF-sanctioned competitions from taking place in either country. The federation described the restrictions as exceptional measures intended to protect participants, preserve sporting integrity and safeguard relationships between its members, while saying they could be adapted as circumstances evolved.

The participation rules subsequently changed. On June 26, 2026, the executive board announced that Russian and Belarusian athletes in all age groups were immediately eligible to compete in IWF events, subject to applicable eligibility criteria and requirements.

In explaining that decision, the IWF cited International Olympic Committee recommendations concerning neutrality in sport and fair opportunities for athletes to compete internationally. It said restrictions had already been lifted for youth and junior weightlifters earlier in the year, with the June decision extending the framework to every age category.

Awarding Moscow the senior world championships goes beyond allowing individual athletes to return to competition. It gives Russia responsibility for staging the federation’s global senior showcase, a separate and significant development in its relationship with international weightlifting after the restrictions imposed in 2022.

Moscow’s selection was announced alongside three other successful bids. Ahmedabad in India will stage the 2029 senior world championships, while Prishtina in Kosovo will host the 2028 world youth championships and Caracas in Venezuela will organise that year’s world junior championships.

IWF general secretary José Quiñones welcomed the successful bids and framed the allocations as evidence of the sport’s international development. In the federation’s announcement, he highlighted that Kosovo, Venezuela and India would each be organising an IWF world event for the first time.

The announcement identifies Moscow and the championship year but does not specify competition dates or a venue. Those organisational details remain to be set out as the federation and the host prepare for 2030, with the award establishing Russia’s place on the IWF’s future championship calendar.
