Muhammad Ali Biopic Creator Casts Actor After Gym Showdown

Prime Video's upcoming series 'The Greatest,' which chronicles the life of Muhammad Ali, has made its casting decision for the lead role. Director Ben Watkins selected Jaalen Best after witnessing his performance during a gym competition, according to sources.

Watkins, known for his work on the acclaimed series 'The Last Kingdom,' was looking for an actor who embodied the spirit and physicality of Ali. He emphasized that the process involved more than just auditioning actors, but also observing how they handled themselves in challenging situations.

"In my mind, Muhammad Ali would walk in there and say 'I got this.' I wanted to see who had that quality," Watkins told The Hollywood Reporter. The director was particularly interested in finding someone who could channel Ali's confidence and fighting spirit.

Best's selection was based on his ability to demonstrate both strength and agility during the physical trials. His performance in the gym impressed the casting team, as it reflected the kind of determination that Ali was known for throughout his career.

The series is set to explore Ali's journey from his early amateur days through his professional boxing career and beyond. It will focus on his transformation from a young man into a global icon, including his political activism and his impact on American culture.

Watkins has been working closely with Ali's family and estate to ensure the portrayal is authentic and respectful. The series is expected to premiere on Prime Video in 2025, though an exact date has not yet been announced.

The casting of Best marks a significant moment for the production team, as they seek to bring Ali's complex personality to life on screen. His selection reflects the director's commitment to finding the right actor who can capture both the physical and emotional dimensions of the legendary boxer.

Best's background includes various acting roles in film and television, but his gym competition experience was pivotal in securing the role. The series is expected to be a major production with high production values and a strong creative team behind it.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that the casting process involved multiple rounds of physical evaluations, which is unusual for television productions. Watkins wanted to ensure the chosen actor could handle the physical demands of portraying Ali in various scenes throughout the series.

As filming begins, fans are eagerly anticipating how Best will embody one of the most iconic figures in sports history. The series promises to offer a fresh perspective on Ali's life and legacy, potentially redefining how audiences view the legendary boxer.
