A man suspected of killing one person and injuring five in a shooting in the Paris suburbs has been placed under psychiatric observation, French anti-terrorism prosecutors said Sunday. The assessment will determine whether his mental health allows investigators to resume questioning him.

The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office, known as PNAT, said the transfer followed a psychiatric examination on Saturday evening. The suspect, identified in French media as 39-year-old Kevin T., was moved to a police psychiatric unit on the advice of a specialist, with observation expected to last 48 hours.

The shooting took place Friday in Trappes and nearby La Verrière, west of Paris. An attacker opened fire from a car in the two communities, with people of migrant origin appearing to have been targeted, according to the BBC’s account of the attack.

President Emmanuel Macron described the shooting as a “racist terrorist attack,” saying people had been targeted because of their skin colour or religion. Anti-terrorism prosecutors are handling the investigation, while the psychiatric assessment addresses the separate question of whether the suspect can continue to be interviewed.

The person killed was Pengo Bossio Wangi, a 26-year-old French-Congolese martial artist, who was publicly identified on Saturday. His mixed martial arts club paid tribute to his character and generosity, describing someone who supported others both during training and outside the gym.

Among the five injured was a 12-year-old girl reported to be in critical condition. La Verrière Mayor Nicolas Dainville told France Info on Sunday that he had spoken with her mother and received an encouraging update, although his remarks did not establish that she was out of danger.

Prosecutors had extended the suspect’s detention on Saturday so that investigators could continue questioning him. They then lifted his custody following the psychiatric examination that evening. PNAT also reported that testing had detected cannabis and cocaine in his bloodstream, without establishing in the reported statement what role, if any, those substances played.

The psychiatric transfer drew criticism from a lawyer representing Wangi, according to the BBC. The lawyer alleged that the move risked portraying the suspect as lacking criminal responsibility rather than having acted deliberately. That allegation is not a finding, and the stated purpose of the observation is to assess his fitness for further questioning.

The immediate next step is the outcome of the psychiatric observation period. Prosecutors have framed it as an assessment of whether questioning can continue, rather than an announced conclusion about the suspect’s mental condition at the time of the shooting. Whether interviews resume will depend on that assessment.
