Britain’s Dalton Smith retained his WBC light-welterweight world title with a split-decision victory over Alberto Puello at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena. The champion came through a closely fought homecoming contest to complete his first successful defence and extend his unbeaten professional record to 20 wins.

Two judges scored the fight 115-113 for Smith, while the third favoured Puello 116-112. The contrasting cards reflected a contest in which neither boxer established an overwhelming advantage, leaving the outcome uncertain until the final decision was announced.

Smith, 29, had won the championship by stopping Subriel Matias in New York in January. Against Puello, he faced a different examination: rather than securing another stoppage, the Sheffield fighter needed to sustain his challenge across the full distance against an experienced former world champion.

The opening exchanges were measured, with both men reluctant to leave openings as they assessed each other’s timing and movement. Smith sought opportunities to close the distance, while the Dominican southpaw used his reach and counter-punching to make those approaches difficult.

As the fight developed, Smith found openings for his right hand, but Puello repeatedly interrupted his momentum. The challenger’s straight left became an important weapon, particularly during the middle rounds, ensuring the champion could not settle into a comfortable pattern.

The Yorkshire Post described a tactical contest in which Smith’s willingness to take calculated risks met Puello’s efforts to maintain distance. Their exchanges remained competitive into the later rounds, with effective attacks frequently drawing an immediate response rather than allowing either fighter to take lasting control.

Smith continued to press as the contest approached its conclusion, with the home crowd urging him forward. He landed right hands in the final round and briefly played to the spectators before the bell, although the divided scorecards ultimately underlined how narrow his winning margin had been.

The result handed Puello only his second defeat in 27 professional fights, according to Sky Sports. For Smith, overcoming a challenger with previous world-title experience added a successful defence to the breakthrough championship victory he had achieved earlier in the year.

Speaking to DAZN after the fight, Smith acknowledged the difficulty of facing an awkward, experienced opponent and said he was still gaining experience at championship level. He also credited his work in the closing rounds as an important part of securing the result.

Attention now turns to whether Smith can turn his successful homecoming into a larger Sheffield occasion. BBC Sport reported that a Hillsborough Stadium fight remains an ambition, with Shakur Stevenson among the major names he could target; neither prospect was presented as a confirmed next assignment.
