Fed Holds Rates in 10–2 Vote, Leaving AI Stocks Facing Hike Risk

The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged, offering relief to rate-sensitive AI shares. But two dissents favoring an increase underscored that borrowing costs could still rise.

The Federal Reserve held its benchmark interest rate steady on October 28 in a 10–2 vote, avoiding an immediate increase in borrowing costs. The decision offered breathing room for artificial intelligence stocks, although the split highlighted continuing pressure for tighter policy.

The target range remains 3.75%–4%, according to the Federal Reserve’s policy statement. Lisa D. Cook and Beth M. Hammack dissented because they preferred a quarter-percentage-point increase, making the disagreement about whether to raise rates rather than whether to cut them.

The committee described economic growth as strong, domestic spending as resilient and capital investment as robust. It also said inflation remained elevated and that additional information would help determine the policy needed to return inflation to its 2% objective.

Market performance showed a stronger response among semiconductor shares than across equities broadly. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF finished Wednesday up 1.7%, compared with a 0.3% gain for the S&P 500, The Motley Fool reported. AI infrastructure provider CoreWeave rose 5.6% during the regular session, the publication said.

The connection between rates and AI shares operates partly through valuations. As The Motley Fool explained, growth companies depend more heavily on earnings expected farther into the future; higher discount rates reduce the present value of those earnings. That makes the interest-rate outlook relevant even when a company’s growth expectations have not changed.

Financing provides another channel. The publication noted that AI infrastructure companies are borrowing heavily to build data centers, exposing their expansion plans to borrowing costs. Holding the policy rate steady avoids a fresh increase at this meeting, but does not itself make those projects cheaper to finance.

The distinction is between relief from an immediate policy move and evidence of a lasting change in direction. An unchanged benchmark is not a rate cut, and it does not guarantee easier financing ahead. Investors therefore have to separate the benefit of Wednesday’s decision from assumptions about the following meetings.

Yahoo Finance’s coverage likewise framed the decision around the continuing inflation problem rather than the start of an easing cycle. It reported that the debate at the beginning of 2026 had centered on whether rates would fall during the year. The current focus on potential increases represents a different backdrop for growth-stock investors.

For AI businesses, the implications depend on how much their investment plans rely on external financing and how much of their valuation rests on distant profits. Those are related but distinct exposures: borrowing costs affect funding, while discount rates affect what investors will pay for expected earnings. A pause removes neither sensitivity.

The next policy decisions will turn on incoming evidence, with the Fed’s statement emphasizing the need for more information. For AI investors, the outlook remains conditional: Wednesday avoided an immediate increase, but the inflation assessment and two pro-hike dissents left the possibility of further tightening open.
