SAG-AFTRA Extends Duncan Crabtree-Ireland’s Contract Through 2032, Adds CEO Title
SAG-AFTRA’s board approved a four-year extension for Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, keeping its chief negotiator in place through 2032 and adding chief executive officer to his title.

SAG-AFTRA’s national board voted Saturday, October 24, to extend Duncan Crabtree-Ireland’s contract for four years and add chief executive officer to his title. The agreement keeps the union’s national executive director under contract through June 20, 2032, rather than the previously scheduled expiration in 2028.
Financial terms were not disclosed. The union said the CEO designation reflects his existing responsibilities, and he will remain chief negotiator. The decision therefore retains the executive responsible for leading staff and negotiating agreements rather than announcing a handoff in those functions.
SAG-AFTRA President Sean Astin endorsed the extension, pointing to Crabtree-Ireland’s bargaining experience and operational leadership. Crabtree-Ireland, in turn, identified control over performers’ images, likenesses and voices, alongside fair compensation, as priorities for the years ahead. The union framed the decision as providing continuity during industry disruption.
The extension reaches beyond the term of SAG-AFTRA’s current television and theatrical agreement, which runs from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2030. That places Crabtree-Ireland’s new employment expiration after the next scheduled expiration of the contracts covering television, film and streaming production, preserving continuity across that bargaining timetable.
Members ratified the 2026 TV/Theatrical Agreement in voting completed June 4, according to the union. The deal addresses wages, benefits, streaming residuals and working conditions, as well as protections involving artificial intelligence. Those provisions provide the immediate contractual backdrop for the leadership decision, although the executive extension does not itself alter performers’ employment terms.
In their May explanation of the television and theatrical deal, Astin and Crabtree-Ireland highlighted annual increases of 3% in minimum pay, compounding to 12.55% over four years. They also outlined a plan to combine the SAG Pension Plan and AFTRA Retirement Plan, with additional funding and a target completion date of January 1, 2028. Improvements to streaming residuals and access to live virtual auditions were among the other measures they emphasized.
Artificial intelligence remains another substantial area of contract administration. SAG-AFTRA’s published explanation describes protections for digital replicas resembling individual performers and for synthetic performers that do not depict a recognizable person. The union says producers must follow notice and bargaining requirements before using synthetics, with arbitration available for violations. These rules make consent, compensation and enforcement practical workplace issues, not simply future negotiating subjects.
Crabtree-Ireland will continue overseeing bargaining while those agreements are implemented and the union prepares for subsequent negotiations. His extended contract provides a longer leadership horizon, but it does not establish the demands or outcomes of future talks. For now, SAG-AFTRA’s stated approach is to retain its executive leadership while pursuing protections for human performance and fair pay.
