Jessica Biel says the developing “7th Heaven” reboot will take a more direct approach to issues facing children and parents while retaining the original show’s emphasis on family viewing. Speaking on Collider Ladies Night, the actor and executive producer outlined a contemporary version that would be less restrained in its storytelling.

Biel identified technology, school pressures, bullying, drugs and alcohol as subjects the new series wants to explore. She said the original addressed difficult material cautiously, with close attention to audience expectations, whereas the reboot has more room to approach those experiences realistically.

“We have less limitations now,” Biel said. Her comments described a creative ambition rather than a completed production, pairing a willingness to confront difficult subjects with a continued commitment to programming that parents and children can watch together.

Variety first reported in May 2025 that a reboot was in early development at CBS Studios. That report identified Anthony Sparks as executive producer and showrunner, with Biel and Michelle Purple executive producing through Iron Ocean and DeVon Franklin executive producing through Franklin Entertainment and his CBS Studios deal.

At the time of that announcement, sources told Variety the proposed series would center on a diverse family rather than bring back the original cast. No network or streaming service was attached then, and deals were still being worked out. Those details framed the project as a new interpretation rather than a Camden family reunion.

The original “7th Heaven” aired for 11 seasons from 1996 to 2007 on The WB and The CW. Biel played Mary Camden in the drama about a minister, his wife and their children, whose lives supplied stories about growing up, relationships and family responsibilities.

Explaining the appeal of revisiting that territory, Biel pointed to her own difficulty finding television she can share with her children. She also described family, community and faith as elements worth retaining, alongside an outlook that can remain hopeful without avoiding uncomfortable realities.

Biel’s ambitions extend to the working environment behind the camera. Discussing her producing role rather than a return as Mary, she said emotionally demanding material requires a protected setting where performers can be creative and vulnerable. She described helping people feel supported as a continuing priority in her production work.

Her update offers a clearer account of the reboot’s intended tone, but not a release timetable or an announced cast. For now, the project’s direction rests on the balance she described: maintaining a recognizable family-centered foundation while giving a new ensemble room to confront contemporary problems more openly.
